Non-musical interlude
Be a better person. We are told from an early age to strive always to be a “good” person. In those days, it didn’t amount to much more than saying “please” and “thank you,” and not pushing while standing in the lunch line. These days, its more than simple morality or self-discipline, but exceedingly complex and devoid of the black and white, good versus evil perspective. To be a good person, now thoroughly entrenched in adulthood as I’m beginning to understand, is to be in a constant state of “self-improvement.”
A foreigner friend of mine once in total exasperation commented to me that this is uniquely characteristic of this country. That only here is nothing ever good enough. I’m inclined to agree as I write this blog post guiltily during work hours when I should be completing two or three spreadsheets, or perhaps eating a nutritious lunch, or attending a lunch-time lecture, or even calling my mother to see if she’s made those changes to her resume. Better yet, listening to NPR whilst writing those dozen or so networking emails… in Arabic.
When does it get easy? Intelligence is an illusion, folks.
